PROJECTS

Freedom City 2017

Gateway Studio participated in the Freedom City 2017 event which took place in several locations of Newcastle City Centre, most notably the iconic Tyne Bridge of Newcastle upon Tyne.

'My Knowledge Increase, My Memories Reflect' is a contemporary dance piece inspired by Dr Martin Luther King, which was performed at the Boiler House at Newcastle University

Over 60 of our Gateway Studio family took part in this special event - some of which were our Adult Contemporary Group, Phoenix Academy NE, Gateway Youth Group, Lingey House Primary and our very talented Moko Jumbies group.

Thank you to all our dedicated and supportive parents who not only bring their children every week but also supported the whole event and were with us from start till end.

Thank you to our professionals, Hugh Davis, Namron, Jerome Wilks and Alan Vaughan. You were all a true inspiration to our young people and our community. To Tim Supple, Mike Griffiths and their team for all their tireless work to create and produce the event.

And finally, thanks to the Gateway Studio team, Martin, Debbie, Pete and Andrea for putting ourselves out there every day and creating opportunities for our community.

Gateway at Lion Salt Works

SALT is a Virtual Reality Installation created by renowned dancer and choreographer Martin Hylton. This fully immersive dance piece was presented in 360° virtual reality and inspired by the history of the UK’s last open pan salt works.

Using a Virtual Reality headset, visitors were able to step into an immersive dance piece, which gave a sense of what it would have been like to work in this industrial environment.

SALT, part of Meeting Point2. Funded by Arts Council England’s Museum Resilience Fund and led by Arts&Heritage (www.artsandheritage.org.uk).

Meeting Point2 presents artworks in unexpected places and supports small and medium scale museums to commission artists, who will create a piece of work in response to the venue.

Northern Stage

We were commissioned by Northern Stage to work with a group of young dancers to create a piece of choreography to be performed as a curtain raiser to the professional production of Bekos Quest. The young people gave up their school holiday to work as a company with our Artistic Director, Martin Hylton

GCSE Dance success

As an organisation, we fully support our young people in gaining an accreditation for their commitment to dance. We offer an out of schools hour GCSE in Dance that bolts onto their training program with us. Our last cohort was very successful and all students gained an A* at the end of the course. We have a new cohort starting in January 2017.

We are also pleased to announce that Debbie is now a qualified Examiner and Moderator for GCSE Dance through AQA.

James Calvert Spence College

We currently support James Calvert Spence College in Amble. We deliver their GCSE dance program and run their after school provision.

We work with their students to produce a piece of choreography. They annually attend the Pulse Dance Festival (Youth Dance England) and represent their School in the regional heats.

Belgrade Theatre, Coventry

Our Youth Company were invited to The Belgrade Theatre to be part of their Inspiring Curiosity Festival. As a Company, we supported them in applying for funds through The Key Fund, to raise money for travel, food and tracksuits. They were successful in securing £1000 towards the weekend. They were able to take part in drama and dance workshops throughout the weekend and performed their new choreography on the last night

Expressive Arts GCSE

In partnership with Gateshead Councils Looked After team, we deliver GCSE in Expressive Arts. It is now at the end of its second year and we have worked with 15 students who successfully gained the qualification.

A lot of the children we work with do not attend mainstream school, or have some learning or social difficulties. The course provides them with a safe, nurturing environment to explore their interests and talents in the Arts.

It also provides them with a valuable GCSE qualification, which they may not have been able to achieve without the opportunity or support from the Gateway Studio team.

Our young people go on a real journey, exploring and developing their interests and growing in confidence whilst working with our Professional dance artists.
